John Fetty-Lovell was born in Sheridan, Montana. He grew up in rural Beaverhead County, Montana. In high school, he guided at one of the earliest established dude ranches in Montana, outside of Melville, where he spent the summers traipsing around the Crazy Mountains ahorseback. He moved to northwest Wyoming following high school, where he earned a degree in Outdoor Education and Recreation Management. During his time in Wyoming, he guided whitewater rafting, fly-fishing, backpacking, rock climbing, and other outdoor activity trips. He returned to Montana to obtain a Bachelors in English Literature from the University of Montana. He focused on historical and environmental literary analysis, and conducted oral histories. Upon graduating, he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he currently resides with his partner and their two dogs.
