Stringer - Cody, Wyoming

Photos from various trips to Stringer, a WI 3 in the South Fork Shoshone drainage. This is my all time favorite climb, after seven or so years climbing every weekend in the valley. This was a climb I would return to over and over again. It was my first true ice lead, and in writing this description, I get a heavy feeling in my chest, and memories come back of living in Cody. It is truly a near and dear place.

I cannot claim rights to all photos. Credits go to Travis, my climbing partner and eventual roommate.

Curtains, Cody Wyoming

The early season climb of Cody, rated WI 3. Located on the Carter Mountain Massif. This was one of my first ice climbs. I cannot claim all photos as my own. Additional credit goes to Keith, Darrin, Travis, Aaron, Jason, and others I’m sure I am forgetting.

Too Cold To Fire - Cody Wyoming

Not much climbing here, but Too Cold To Fire is a WI 4 on the South Fork. Photos taken from multiple trips.

Smoked Turkey, Cody Wyoming

Photos taken during an expedition to this climb during the 2008 Cody Waterfall Ice Festival. I met Doug and Chris at the party, and they wanted someone to show them around a bit, so I took them back into this area.

Purge the System, Cody Wyoming

On the North Fork Shoshone. First known ascent, January 22, 2008, which we rated WI 3. This was one of a trio of climbs my partner, Travis Hannon, and I put up on the North Fork. This was one of my favorites. Thin, and fun. We were there in leaner times, but with the right weather, there would be much more ice, extending further up the mountain. Additional credits to Travis Hannon.

Clive and the Comanche, Cody Wyoming

On the North Fork of the Shoshone River. This was a first known ascent I did with my partner, Travis Hannon during the winter of 2007/2008. We rated it WI4???, due to the need to be a rather decent tree climber. True Wyoming scrappy mixed climbing. I recall the wall behind the pillar was somewhat solid, but smooth and lacked much feature. I wanted to attempt climbing the rock up onto the pillar, but it was so anemic when we made our attempt, the curtain would have been liable to break off.

This climb is named for one of our guiding brothers, Clive, who was from North Carolina. We taught him to climb, he taught me to be a far better boater. I’m amazed the people I met in Cody, whom I have fallen out of touch with, but still feel so close. Additional photo credits to Travis Hannon.

Ouray Ice Festival, 2008

A fun trip to Ouray, ten years ago as I write this. Additional photo credits go to Don and Travis.
